Dr Ekaterina Lapina-Kratasyuk is an Associate Professor in the Department of Cultural Studies of the Russian State University for the Humanities (RGGU, Moscow). She is also associate researcher in the Department of Screen Culture and New Communication Technologies of the Russian Institute of Culturology (RIK, Moscow). Her research as well as teaching interests include media studies, history and theory of cinema, Internet studies and cultural sociology. Her publications focus on the construction of "reality" in TV and Internet news programmes, on sociological analysis of commercials, representation of the past in popular culture. She teaches courses in the Theories of Informational Society, Culture of Mass Communication, History of World Cinema, Sociology of RuNet.
The article explores the influence of the Internet on the construction of reality in contemporary Russian media. The research output is based on the analysis of a survey conducted among a group of students from a Moscow university. The main aim of the survey was to examine the structure of the audiences and their media consumption and determine the role the latter plays in formation of the public opinion in relation to Russian political issues, especially the most recent Georgia versus South Ossetia conflict.
